Baseline and emphasized type
Emphasis is a stronger companion to the same role and size. The job and scale position stay put; weight rises and tracking tightens so selected, active or editorial text carries more presence.

Reach for emphasized when
Selection
A selected tab, item or active state needs to read as chosen.
Action
A primary action or call-out you want to carry more weight.
Editorial
A headline or passage that wants extra editorial punch.
Emphasis lives at the type-scale and type-styles layers. Change how it is derived — weight and tracking — in Customize.
Do / Don’t
✓ Do
- Use emphasized as a deliberate contrast inside a baseline system.
- Keep the role and size aligned with the text’s structural job.
× Don’t
- Use emphasized everywhere; contrast disappears when everything is strong.
- Substitute emphasis for hierarchy when the text really needs a different role.
